Apologies from Colorado College. Somehow the Colorado College Public Interest Fellowship Program(PIFP) numbers for 2011-12 did not get reported to TAN. We are happy to report the PIFP placed 18 summer fellows and 12 yearlong fellows with nonprofit organizations this year--our largest number of fellows yet. Thank you.

Congratulations John and Princeton 55 for all the great work you do. Without collective effort of many people spread out over many places and many years most of the significant social problems facing our country and world will not be solved.

I've led the Tutor/Mentor Connection in Chicago since 1993 as an effort to collect information that anyone could use to help build and sustain mentoring, tutoring and learning programs in high poverty neighborhoods that connect volunteers who don't live in poverty with young people who do. I've maintained a directory of non-school tutor/mentor programs since 1994 and share this on an interactive map-based portal that enables anyone to know what programs are operating and what neighborhoods still don't have programs.

In addition I've organized events like a May and November Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference to encourage people to come together face to face on an on-going basis and to build public attention that works like advertising to draw volunteers and donors directly to all of the tutor/mentor programs in the Chicago region.

In addition I've used print and email newsletters to share information that I discover with others who might want to use t his information in their own efforts.

The next conference is Friday, November 4 and I invite Princeton 55 members in Chicago to participate. The web site is http://www.tutormentorconference.org . We're all getting a bit older and without younger people taking ownership of this information and these ideas what we have built and learned over many years may be lost to future generations.

Question -

Has there ever been any consideration of somehow involving the Graduate School in some aspect of the Alumni Corps? Not for a minute do I think that graduates there would be heavy contributors but they might be useful in placements or PR operations. Some graduates might have positions in organizations which would lend themslves to employment. I know that Dean Russel is interested in getting the School more involved with the University (at least that's what he has said) and it might be worth a telephone call to see if there is any interest. I think that the Graduate School is one of the great untapped resources for the University. I know Dean Russel to some extent and if I can be of any use, let me know.

I am Gordon Douglas's sister and am just learning about the issues with food and the terrible exploitation to obtain it, let alone the harm it does to our bodies. I live in Nashville, Tn. and there are several local farms that in the near future will be endangered by Tyson Chicken. I hope to start working on that very big problem in the near future and to also encourage my friends here. Most of them already are on the right path so reaching the others will be the challenge. This is a big meat eating part of the country.

It was a pleasure participating in this event and panel. Thank you so much for hosting a presentation on such an important topic that. We're so lucky that we can tackle some of the world's largest problems, from climate change and global hunger, to animal welfare and public health, with the simple choices we make every time we sit down to eat.

Yours for compassion and change,

Those who have known Sally during these many years following our graduation, and especially in the past 21 years since the inception of PP 55, now Princeton AlumniCorps, have felt the warmth of and benefitted from the insights of a wonderful supporter. We now suffer a void, but we also have wonderful memories.

I think John, like many of the Founders of PP'55, was too modest in assessing his role. I think he was one of the "real heroes" of Project 55, and we value all of his contributions in keeping the flame alive for public service and civic engagement.

Most of the posts on this site have been posted by our Project 55 fellows, especially by Alejandro Perez who keeps us up-to-date on everything! I thought it appropriate that someone from the older ( or should I say oldest) generation add a voice to the blog. Most of you reading his note never knew or even heard of John Tucker '55. He was one of the founders of PP55 back in 1989 and represented what was the best in the Class of 1955 and in the agency he helped to establish. His death is a loss for all of us. His life was was a model for civic responsibility and action. Chet Safian '55
